THE EFFECT OF USING EDUCATIONAL COMICS IN SCIENCE CLASS ON HIDDEN ATTITUDE, MOTIVATION AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

This pretest-posttest quasi-treatment design with control group is used in which groups are examined on the attitudes, motivation and academic achievements of the comics students taught in the Science course. The research is carried out with 80 fourth grade students attending their homes in a primary school in the city center of Hatay in the 2021-2022 academic year. An easily accessible and voluntary primary school was included in the study. Two branches from the fourth grades at the school were determined as the Control Group, and two branches as the Experimental Group. In order to collect data from the students within the scope of the research, the Science Lesson Attitude Scale (FBDTS), the Motivation Scale for Science Learning (FÖYME), the Simple Electric Circuits Achievement Test (BEDBT) were used. In this study, in which the effects of educational comics on academic achievement, attitude towards the course and motivation were examined, two educational comics were developed to be used for one week in line with the achievements in the Science Curriculum. There is one achievement in the first comic and two achievements in the second comic. A scenario was prepared by the researcher and the scenario was examined in terms of language and meaning by an academician who is an expert in the field of Turkish education and necessary arrangements were made. This scenario was turned into a comic book using the Pixton website. The measurement tools were applied to the experimental and control groups in the form of pre-test and post-test, and the change in student scores with the experimental intervention was determined. As a result of the research, it was seen that there was a significant difference in favor of the experimental group between the attitude, motivation and academic achievement post-test scores of the experimental and control group students. Accordingly, it can be said that educational comics have a positive effect on the variables of attitude towards the course, motivation and academic achievement.
