The aim of this study is to examine the views of pre-service teachers on the status of the teaching profession in Turkey, the factors affecting the status and the regulatory activities related to the improvement of the status. In this context, case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was preferred in the study. Within the scope of the study, the opinions of 158 pre-service teachers determined by convenience sampling method were collected through a structured form and these data were analysed by content analysis method. The findings are presented in tables and supported by direct quotations. The results of the study show that a significant portion of the pre-service teachers think that the teaching profession is not sufficiently valued in the society. Regarding the factors that damage the status of the teaching profession, it was observed that they emphasised general practices originating from the education system, working conditions of teachers, attitudes of school stakeholders, developing and changing technology and society. When these factors were analysed in detail, it was seen that pre-service teachers mentioned the professional qualifications of teachers on duty, negative attitudes of school stakeholders towards teachers, salaries, perception of the teaching profession as a simple job that anyone can do, difficulties of graduates to be appointed or find a job, differentiation of access to information today and negative reflections on the teaching profession in the media as factors that negatively affect the status of the profession. In order to increase the value of the teaching profession, the participants emphasised the importance of increasing the quality of teacher education, applying higher score thresholds in student admission to education faculties, increasing teacher salaries to a level appropriate to the importance of the profession, developing policies to improve the quality of life of teachers, and increasing the number of programmes and content in the media that emphasise the success of teachers and their contributions to society. Based on the results obtained in the study, it is suggested that quantitative and qualitative arrangements should be made in education faculties in order to improve the status of the teaching profession, and measurement and evaluation processes in the selection of prospective teachers should be re-evaluated. In addition to this, it is recommended to make arrangements in the working conditions and salaries of teachers. In addition, it can be said that it is important to prevent negative perceptions of teachers in the media and to reflect the professional image of teachers to the society in a constructive way.
